There is a series of three books by LtCol LB Oatts on the Highland Light Infantry. Volume I covers the 71st Foot, Volume II the 74th (with a chapter on Assaye) and Volume III covers the amalgamated regiments as the Highland Light Infantry. I have the first two, and they are excellent. There are no notes, so that might be a drawback to some, but I received Volume II as a gift from my brother who was then serving in Kenya with the Peace Corps. I picked up Volume I years later on my own and greatly treasure both volumes which are great reads.
The title is Proud Heritage: The Story of the Highland Light Infantry.
