By the time of 1807/1808, when Napoleon had already settled on a divorce, Eugène never would have received anything anymore. Not even Italy (he just did not know that yet.) After the divorce, he was bound to become a political burden.
As to Napoleon picking Joseph for the throne: Has anybody ever wondered in how far the fact Joseph did not have a son played into this?
