About the white field after the battle, supposedly due to paper - which in my view could only be paper sheets and no books, as the author suspects as such like as the livre de comptes, which indeed each French soldiers should carry, it was a small booklet which is about a bit larger than a smart phone and was a sort of pay book, and what equipment was issued, as well as a description of the soldier, etc.
