Sieyes

At one of the first meetings of the new Consuls after Brumaire, Sieyes proposed that they share the funds that had been set aside to compensate the outgoing Director designated by lot to resign his office. Napoleon refused the funds (the state had less than 200,000 francs in its coffers at the time). Nonetheless, Sieyes not only pocketed his share, but took the greatest part of the windfall. (Sieyes, on 18 Brumaire had all his money in the saddlebag of his horse, ready to flee if things went bad.)
