San Francisco had it's own Panorama of Waterloo!
Description
This pamphlet most likely was offered to visitors of the Panorama of Waterloo building located at the corner of Mason and Eddy Streets, circa 1880s. According to the pamphlet, the hexadecagon-shaped building was home to a panoramic canvas of the Battle of Waterloo, painted by French artists Joseph Bertrand and Lucien Sergent. Included in the pamphlet is a foldout replica of the panorama complete with a key to important locations and individuals depicted in the picture. The booklet also includes historical accounts of the Battle of Waterloo, an assessment of Napoleon, biographies of Bertrand and Sergent, a description of the Panorama building, a press notice of the exhibit, and advertisements for local merchants. A statement on the title page says "The building is illuminated by 24 electric lights."
Notes
The pamphlet has 34 pages and a folded leaf of plates depicting the panorama of the Battle of Waterloo. The item has been digitized as a.pdf. The panorama itself is a "great work of art [and] is the joint production of Joseph Bertrand and Lucien Sergent " p. [7].
