Polish troops figured prominently in the Napoleon era throughout Europe. Legends of their deeds kept patriotism alive in the 19th century

Count Adam Zamoyski was brought up in England but spent much of his youth in other European countries. He read History and Modern Languages at Queen’s College, Oxford. He speaks French, Italian, Russian and Polish. His family left Poland when it was invaded by Germany and Russia in 1939. He is a historian and author of over a dozen books, including Napoleon. The Man Behind the Myth, The Last King of Poland and his first book, Chopin. Prince of the Romantics, serialised on BBC Radio 4. Zamoyski began to visit Poland in the late 1960s. He has a deep understanding of the history and culture of Poland and of other nations, within the pan-European context.
