Hello All, I have yet another request for assistance - my apologies.
My research on a small number of local men who served in the wars has led me to deduce that one of them was Major Charles Napier's orderly sergeant at the battle of Corruna. Unfortunately a visit to TNA archives is not possible just now, and I need to confirm the name on the musters for the period. May I ask if anyone has access to the muster rolls of the 50th Foot during the Corunna campaign? If so, would you be willing to check a name for me?
Thanks in anticipation.
Such is life Rob, thanks for looking. At least the poor fellow wasn't a casualty - lucky for him, sad for the historian!
Sorry, he's not in the casualty lists I've got. The only one of the sources I have that would list individual soldiers. He would have had to have gone missing, deserted or died to appear there anyway.
Rob, thanks for this kind offer, these lists are certainly of interest to me. The individual in question is one Sgt William Keene. I know that he enlisted in 1803 and died in service in 1817, but would like to track him in between. Charles Napier mentions in his memoir a Sgt Keene as his orderly sergeant, and clearly this could be one and the same man but I need to check if there was another of that name in the battalion in 1809. If you can shed further light on him in 1811/12 I would be delighted however.
I've got some inspection reports, returns and casualty lists for the 50th in 1811/12 if that's of any interest? No pay lists though.
Hello Zack, thanks for this swift response and suggestion. I don't use Twitter, but I could seek guidance from those that do perhaps.
Ian, are you on twitter? Some of the historians on there may have it, if no-one here has the relevant photos.
