I admit - I found it rather a good read, though lacking of course all knowledge about Lannes.
I am appalled! Poor Jean-Boy's letter sounds as if he actually shared Trump's speechwriter: "What a beautiful battle, especially as it gives us peace! I won’t talk to you of the conduct of my army corps. It did so many beautiful things that it is not up to me to sing its praises." I also notice Kevin Broucke tactfully omitted the reason why Jean-Boy was not at Tilsit. When Naps announced that Bessieres was among the honor guard selected to teeter on the raft with the rest of the luminaries, Jean said Bessieres didn't deserve the honor because he wasn't anywhere on the battlefield long enough to get dusty--quite a public and profane opinion, naturally. And then he went home. Right then.
I really don't care for such literal and excessively formal translations of French letters and documents. Might work for some personages, Berthier, for instance, or Davout, but not for my boy.
