Thanks for the feed back, yes it is somehow depressing what kind of rumors exist about Berthier's death and as usually in history, one is just copied all over again so in the end it gets used without even thinking or reflecting.
On the evening before the fall there was a great banquet sponsored by the father in law of Berthier and one of the Russian generals paid compliments to Berthier that he stayed faithful to the King, which embarrassed poor Berthier a bit.
Russian officers conducted a sort of death watch to honour Berthier, why should disguised Russian officers try to kill him?
Already at the 24th of May Russian troops taking quarters in the Bamberg area.
Berthier watched those troops passing through for some days.
For me it still stays a mystery which he decided to watch from this window - the passing units - a brigade of Russian dragoons. They did not pass directly underneath the window but in a street which was quite well hidden by the roofs of the houses and there is really only one semi unobstructed view where to see part of the street.
After his death - his private papers were checked to see in case there was correspondence with Boney - there was none.
