ABSTRACT:
The essay deals with the Suppression of the Religious Order in Piedmont between the end of the 18th Century and the beginning of the 19th. It focuses on the Napoleonic law (1802) and its effect on the clergy. It is tripartite in structure: firstly, it concentrates on the laws made by the king of Sardinia before, and the French government after. The second part focuses on the numbers of the monasteries and convents suppressed and sold in 1802. The last part discusses the “indulto di secolarizzazione” granted by the Holy See to the Religious in Piedmont.
