I am reading around the scandal around the Duke of York and Mrs Clarke in 1809 and, in the evidence brought before parliament, mention is made of Major John Shaw, who was in Champagny's Regiment.
Was Champagny's, or Champagne's, a royalist regiment in British service in 1806? Or perhaps it was a former Dutch unit, as the major was at the Cape of Good Hope in that year?
Champagne's Regiment became 1st Ceylon Regiment.
In 1805 the Regimental Colonel was Major General Josiah Champagne. John Shaw was the junior major in the regiment.
