Hi all, Can anyone tell me which division the British 2nd battalion, 58th regt was with in 1812, specifically around the time of the siege of Burgos? Oman says that by 1813 they were part of the third provisional battalion along with the 2nd 24th, but my notes don't show anything for 1812. They'd been out in the Peninsula for a few years by that point Any thoughts would be very welcome. Many thanks Z

on the 20th October the 2/58th were assigned to Pack's command but returned to the 1st Division when the retreat began the next day.
Oman, Wellington's Army, says posted to Wheatley's/Stopford's Brigade of 1st Division 2 April 1812. Ordered to be transferred to 5th Division 1 June but "orders will hereafter be given as to the regiment joining the brigade" and in fact 'seems to' [Oman's caveat] have remained with 1st Division until after the retreat from Burgos.
Going by the Army by Brigades & Divisions in WO 17/2469 (Jan-Jun 1812) and 2470 (Jul-Dec 1812) they started unattached, then 1st div, by 2nd half of the year were in 5th Div. Not all the brigading returns are dated so can't be sure of the months.
According to Rory Muir's Salamanca 1812 (New Haven: Yale, 2001) page 242 the battalion was in Wheatley's Brigade of the 1st Division. They started the day 31 officers and 369 NCOs, musicians, and other ranks. They had four casualties in the battle.
