Jean-Baptiste Drouet (1763-1824), was the postmaster who recognized King Louis XVI and his family during their attempted escape to Varennes. His fame got him elected to the Convention. As a Representative on Mission at the siege of Maubeuge he was captured by the Austrians, who imprisoned him at the Spielberg Fortress (Spilberk) in Moravia where he was detained as a prisoner of war. Drouet attempted to escape by jumping from the fortress with a parachute made of bed linens. He remained imprisoned until exchanged. He successfully escaped prison a second time after having been implicated in the Conspiracy of Equals of Gracchus Babeuf. He sailed for the Indies but when he landed on the Canaries he was in time to join the fight against an attack by the fleet of Adm. Nelson, in the battle where Nelson lost his arm. He served as a subprefect during the Napoleonic era and again escaped after the fall of Napoleon. He eventually returned to France under an assumed name.
