A detailed examination of one of the key issues for British-American relations, for international trade and for international law.
The taking of prizes, that is the capture of enemy vessels either by the Royal Navy or by private individuals licensed as privateers, was a crucial component of British naval strategy in the eighteenth century. The legality of prize-taking depended on the determination of the nationality or neutrality of both vessel and cargo - a major point of contention between Britain and other powers, including the United States. This book examines the American experience of British prize law from 1776 to 1804, with additional insights up until the 1820s, examining how this branch of international law changed and perpetuated in the wake…

The American Ship John Jay, the Napoleonic Wars, and Risk in the Atlantic World Catherine DeCesare Publisher : Bloomsbury Academic

Catherine DeCesare traces a micro-history of the John Jay using legal records to illustrate political and legal challenges faced by US maritime business in the Atlantic during the Napoleonic Wars.
This book provides a close look at the John Jay's fifth voyage when it was chased and captured by the British Royal Navy. DeCesare analyzes the legal battle that ensued and how the actions of the British Navy underscored US weaknesses. The history of the John Jay reflects both the personal and national uncertainties and struggles of the US foreign policy, domestic policy, and business in the Atlantic, a realm controlled by British law and naval operations at the time.
"We come on the sloop John B
My grandfather and me
Around Nassau town we did roam
Drinking all night
Got into a fight
Well, I feel so broke up
I want to go home
So hoist up the John B's sail
See how the mainsail sets
Call for the captain ashore
Let me go home
Let me go home
I wanna go home, yeah, yeah
Well, I feel so broke up
I wanna go home"
William Casey Baker wrote an academic work on the same subject with a slightly different title (Britain's War for the Mediterranean) that was published by the US Naval Institute Press in 2024. This title seems to be an Osprey 80-page entry in their usual format, with new maps and illustrations. Presumably Random House is acting as the US publisher, although I can't find the title on their web site.
