I am trying to identify a French senior officer who was killed by guerrillas in Spain in 1810. In a letter written by Captain Lewis Ruman, dated 20 June 1810 he writes “A French soldier has murdered the Governor of Segovia. General Hago late Governor of Avila was to replace him, was killed by some of the guerrillas on entering Sergovia.”
1. Does anyone know who was the governor of Segovia that was killed?
2. Who was General Hago?
I have checked Martinien, Quintin’s “Colonels de Napoleon” and Six’s “Les Genereaud et Admiraux” but have found no name that comes close to what Ruman said.
Does anyone know who the French Governor of Avila was in 1810?
Thanks!
Bob
Hugo succeeds General Tilly in command of the province of Segovia, but the latter does not appear to have died. https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k1463437/f245.item
"Hago" is undoubtedly General Joseph Léopold Sigisbert Hugo, father of the writer Victor Hugo
