In 1812 - 1813, Captain Charles Gray, 3rd Battalion 95th Rifles, was sent to the Alicante Region of Spain to recruit Spaniards into the 95th Rifles.
Does anyone know where this region was? I think it was in what is now Estremadura, but cannot find it on a map.
I am fairly sure it is not the city of Alicante, which is on the east coast of Spain.
Thanks!
Bob
It is possible as well that there might have been some reliance on other British-born officers in the area; Whittingham's force was in the area, and there was another British-led division in Spanish service, and if memory serves a couple of officers serving as liaison independently of that. Getting any volunteers out by sea wouldn't have been impossibly arduous, but I'm not aware of any RN use for that purpose. Ship's logs could prove useful if we knew of any brigs or frigates regularly in the area (this has been the case when I've been examining small-scale movements in the Indian Ocean).
