In 1812 - 1813, Captain Charles Gray, 3rd Battalion 95th Rifles, was sent to the Alicante Region of Spain to recruit Spaniards into the 95th Rifles.
Does anyone know where this region was? I think it was in what is now Estremadura, but cannot find it on a map.
I am fairly sure it is not the city of Alicante, which is on the east coast of Spain.
Thanks!

Bob,
Further look at Verner.
In June 1810 there were 3 companies (Percival, Kniveton & Gray) in Cadiz.
In August Percival's company was transferred to Portugal.
Towards end of 1810Lt Col Barnard commanded 4 companies (Ross, Knipe, Gray & Fullarton) on Isla de Leon.
On 30 June 3 companies left Cadiz for Portugal - company commanders not listed. Knipe was killed at Barossa, a company under Jenkins was involved at Tarifa.
In 1812 only 9 Spaniards were shown as enlisted in the 3rd battalion.

Ian -
I am beginning to think Captain Gray actually did recruit there. The one thing that bothers me is how did he get the recruits back to the vicinity of Ciudad Rodrigo?
Despite Quartermaster Surtees comments, the 2nd Battalion was able to recruit 10 Spaniards; the 1st Battalion 61, and the 3rd Battalion 36. These are the ones that actually made it in the payrolls.
Thanks.
Bob
According to Willoughy Verner there was detachment of the 3rd battalion 95th Foot on the East Coast, so the Alicante Region would seem a reasonable place to recruit some replacments rather than from the West of Spain.
The 2nd battalion 95th Foot tried to recruit in Estremadura in the Gata mountains near Plasencia.
