the young Editions Epopées have published a french and english version of the manuscript, Paul Lindsay Dawson having researched every Regimental Archives of the French Army shares his point of view in the article below about
How reliable is the “Camp de Dresde” (Dresden) manuscript ?
I agree with many points in P. Dawson's article, but eye witnesses give us in many cases a more realistic picture than PRO or SHAT files. For example, Rory Muir cites in his fine "Salamanca" study, p. 132, Norcliffe Norcliffe, who explicitly states, that he lay wounded "close to a very fine battallion of Grenadiers, with great bear-skin caps". And (p. 149) Bainbrigge, who writes about a "column of French Grenadiers with hairy caps". And this was in july 1812!
Pauls observations are valid for any memoires or picture manuscript who as per se cannot be without fault, but I also agree with Thomas that they are indispensible sources and provide priceless insight and information.
I am however looking forward what the SHD files will say and how Paul will present and interpret them, as usual context is everything.
Michael Lindt shows how well those files can flesh out human beings and other aspects.
