Does anyone know of letters or memoirs from a Porte-Aigle? Or a Porte-Drapeau or Port-Fanion maybe. Or even 2nd or 3rd, although I know they tended to be illiterate. I'd be particularly interested in someone from the 100 days, but any would be informative.
I'm fascinated by these specialist roles
Any assistance would be gratefully appreciated
Many thanks
Not sure if this helps very much, but from memory, David Howarth's "A Near Run Thing" mentions Cadet Silvain Larreguy (no unit number, sadly) who carried an eagle in the attack on Hougoumont. He is initially ordered to carry it to the rear due to the likely nature of the fighting, but chooses to disobey the order, to massed cheers from the remainder of the regiment. I don't recall him being mentioned again after that.....
