Napoleon's Apogee: Pascal Bressonnet's Tactical Studies 1806 - Saalfeld, Jena and Auerstadt by Pascal Bressonet.

    in General Discussions

Translated and Annotated by Scott Bowden.

"The most illuminating and informative account of Napoleonic warfare ever written. Fully supported with a lavish array of maps, diagrams, orders of battles, uniform plates and illustrations, Napoleon's Apogee is a remarkable event in military history publishing."

For those who cannot read french original sources very well, the translation and adaptation of Bowden (Bressonnet's tactical studies 1806 & Marshal Davout and his III. Corps) is an excellent opportunity to read these basic works on the campaign of 1806/7. In terms of presentation, they are among the most beautiful books I have seen on this subject so far. The maps by Bressonnet have been worked up excellently and are complemented by very nice tactical diagrams made by Arne Limmer and paintings by Steven Palatka and Keith Rocco. Unfortunately, the books are really very expensive, but they are also extraordinarily beautiful.

I bought that "translation" because then - the complete Bressonnet wasn't available on line - but it is not an translation, they made a coffee table book out of it, with loads of illustrations (some nice, some pure fiction, and some obsolete) by that the book became quite spectacular but expensive.

For the reason I did not buy Napoléons Finest, there the Journal of Davout's corps was available in French.

As with all translations - as agreed by all historians - it is preferable to read the original language.

In case, my strong believe, that one can rely only on Anglo Phone sources - and ignore French, German, Russian and others, a very limited and narrow perspective of the Napoleonic period is obtained.

I fully agree with you that it is best to read every source in the original language. No doubt!

Professional historians and a handful of multilingual enthusiasts will certainly do so. But the vast majority of readers interested in history will probably have difficulties reading every interesting source in french, german, russian, spanish or italian language. For the time we are interested in, you could just as easily add swedish, polish, portuguese, dutch or danish...

Personally, I can find my way around german, english and french quite well, but I would be happy if important russian sources were edited in the same way as Bowden did with Bressonnet's work.

@Immo Frese Have you seen Alexander Mikaberidze's material that has been translated from Russian?

Yes very nice maps and Bressonnet - knew his stuff very well, know the spelling, well all those halcyon days are gone and everything has to be garbled like Auerstadt. Loss of respect of non anglo authors and the notion to correct impeccable research.

Please note the spelling and for those reasons much better to read those texts in the original.
