    Austrian Political Crisis August 1796

    in General Discussions

It is one of those period myths that all the other major states were hell bent on destroying the Revolution, while being run in the same centralised fashion as the regime Napoleon later established. This essay https://www.academia.edu/30785967/The_Choice_Between_War_and_Peace_The_Austrian_Political_Crisis_of_August_1796 shows it was a bit more complicated as the states manoeuvred to maintain their positions and the Austrian government was divided by different views on the internal and external pressures it was under.
