Having observed the recent explosion of posts related to published works, I thought it might be useful to have an entire category of the forum specifically devoted to this. That way those who would rather that the 'General Discussion' category remained focused on broader topics of debate will not feel that the discussion is becoming dominated by debates around certain titles. Equally it keeps all associated threads related to books in one place.
Please also be aware that there is a bespoke category of 'new research' - obviously details of new books can fit into either category.
As ever, please adhere to forum rules, keep the discussion polite, and avoid repetitive posts. if the discussion has been covered already, nobody benefits a great deal in covering entrenched positions all over again.
Happy posting.
Perhaps this would be a good place to have book reviews on the site.
Please
hello well I don't know, I wonder if maybe instead of raise a new separate section it would have been better to change the title of the existing section indicating clearly the word BOOKS to avoid ambiguity as we have already opened many threads about them since the beginning, there are, and will be certainly, duplicates threads now...
Thanks Zack, I think this move very wise. I for one have not been impressed by those lockdown politicians and celebrities ‘curating’ their background bookcases in video calls. We are in danger of descending into similar ‘vanity’ book sharing, essentially ‘look at me and how well read I am’. Particularly for those well known titles. Regurgitating publisher’s blurb offers little value above Amazon itself. Perhaps this can be best thought of as a ‘book suggestion’ thread for those new to the period, or wanting to branch into new areas. Half a century or more secondary works which have been overtaken by new research may not be edifying though. Just a personal view.
